Conditions and Grooming  -Wednesday, April 09, 2008 *********************************************************************
Grooming updates will be posted quicker via email for members.
The Golf course is now history for skiing.  The Pisten Bully returned to Lander 4/9/08, but there is still ample snow on the Beaver Creek trails.

"For the want of some fuel, the Pisten Bully was idled; for want of a Pisten Bully the groomers were idled; and for the want of grooming the trails were lost, being overtaken and crusted by the elements, all for the want of some fuel (sort of)."

Basic grooming equipment was moved to Beaver Creek on 11/17, and the first grooming was done Sat. 12/1/07.....
Currently all BC trails are evolving to mud.
The Grooming schedules are flexible, but we try to do it on Wednesday and possibly the weekend.  Weather and conditions dictate our schedule.

Grooming History:
BC =Beaver Creek, GC = golf course

Saturday, May 03, 2008:  Snowmobiles and ginzu pulled from BC.  Equipment quonset hut was taken down.  Skiing is still prime up there.
************************

Wednesday, April 09, 2008:  BC was groomed for skating today, and the Pisten Bully was returned to Lander.  Conditions are still amazing, but we ran out of fuel and interest has been minimal.  It is still great skiing!
************************

Wednesday, April 02, 2008:  BC was groomed this AM for skate and classic.  Conditions are excellent.  Temps range from about 10F at daybreak, to highs of about 35-40F in the afternoon.  The snow temps are staying in the mid 20's in most places, so kick waxes are still non-klister.
Soon the grooming equipment will be brought down for the year.  The snow is going to be skiable for several weeks though.  It really has not begun to melt down up there yet.
******************

Wednesday, March 26, 2008:  No grooming today, but the trails are in excellent condition.  There was about 1" of new snow on top of a nice packed base.  Classic skis will need a soft wax, skate skis will glide well.
********************

UPDATE 3/22/08:  The planets came into alignment and BC was groomed for skate and classic Saturday night, producing excellent conditions.  Forecasts for Easter Sunday are for temps in the 20's to 30's with little wind.  This may be your last chance to ski this season, and it will be a good one.

Saturday, March 22, 2008:  Karmic moon-planet incongruities have curtailed morning grooming.  We hope to get BC groomed this PM or early evening.  Current skiing conditions are good for classic, and skating conditions are varied (hardpack to 2" of new snow.)
*******************

Friday, March 21, 2008:  New snow up top, but wind is blowing today.  Plan on grooming BC early Saturday morning, and conditions should be prime.  There will not be an update until the afternoon, you just have to go try it.
The stranded grooming equipment was removed from the golf course this afternoon, so Kevin and Pat can be golfing again soon.
*************************

Wednesday, March 19, 2008:  BC was groomed for skate and classic this morning.  Conditions are as good as they've been all year, and the snowpack is still continuing to grow!  Who knows how long it will last.
**************************

Saturday, March 15, 2008:  Report from Todd Schimelpfenig ..."I skied March 15th, Saturday.  There is 3-4" fresh snow on a solid base.   Nice skiing albeit slow.  Air temp at 2PM 30F.
**********************

Friday, March 14, 2008:  There is no grooming planned for this weekend.  Classic skiing should still be good.  Depending on how much snow and wind occurs, skating may also be possible/good.  If anybody goes up to ski and then emails me a report at webmaster@landernordic.org , I will post it here.
*********************

Wednesday, March 12, 2008:  BC was groomed for skate and classic this AM.  Currently there is as much snow there as we've had all season.  Skiing is still excellent.
**************************

Wednesday, February 27, 2008:  GC was regroomed yesterday for skate and classic.
BC was groomed today for skate and classic.  There was 2" of new snow there, and skiing is very quiet.  Should be good for the weekend festivities - be there!
***********************

Sunday, February 24, 2008:  BC was groomed for skate and classic Saturday.  Today more snow fell, but conditions should still be okay.
*************************

Saturday, February 23, 2008:  The GC was groomed for skating on Friday morning.
********************

Wednesday, February 20, 2008:  BC was groomed for skate and classic this afternoon.  Conditions are very good, and the snow is holding well.
********************

Sunday, February 17, 2008:  7-9" of fresh snow overnight at BC caught us off-guard, but it was re-groomed today and conditions are excellent (until the next storm.)
***************

Saturday pM, February 16, 2008:  BC was groomed this morning.  Classic tracks are good, but there are none on the BLM loop, which is best for skating.  The new snow was having trouble setting up today, but should be firm tomorrow.
Side-note: The new snow that hit Wednesday night into Thursday amounted to about 9" in most places, with lots of drifting of up to 3 ft deep on some of the trails.  Its the first time that the Pisten Bully had to make passes with the implements up before it could begin grooming many of the trails.  Another interesting factoid is that the wind did not scour snow from any of the trails, as it normally does.  It would have been an interesting evening to have been staying at the yurt.
---------------
Saturday AM, February 16, 2008:  GC clubhouse loops were groomed for skate and classic Friday night.
**************

Thursday, February 14, 2008:  GC was groomed today.  There was about 4" of new snow which makes for some nice skiing.
***********************

Wednesday, February 13, 2008:  GC was groomed today, as was BC.  The new snow will need some ski packing before the next grooming, but both venues have excellent bases and the skiing should be excellent.  BC had a high temp of only 32F today, so the snow there is holding well.
**********************

Wednesday, February 06, 2008:  Grooming will concentrate on preparing BC for the high school ski races this Friday and Saturday.  The GC is groomed, but may become rough due to our concentration elsewhere.  Come out and watch the races!
***
You MAY find  new snow on SOME trails today and you may find windblown sections, also, please use caution as you may see grooming equipment out on the trails today***

*************************

Friday, February 01, 2008:  Don't expect any grooming updates here until Sunday night.  Grooming will be done, but this site will be inactive till then.  Check email.
*************

Wednesday, January 30, 2008:  The GC was groomed yesterday, and Drew sends the following info:  The club house loop from where you put your skis on (in front of the club house/parking lot) following the new layout and including the  little inner circle on the far side is 1.9 miles or 3 km.
The service loop - the little loop that goes  around to where we park the grooming equip is 0.2 miles or 0.3 km
The back nine from the top of the hill (the gate) and back up is 1.7 miles or 2.7 km.  So 6 km total!
BC will be groomed during the midday today, reports of new snow and drifting over the last few days.
***You MAY find  new snow on SOME trails today and you may find windblown sections, also, please use caution as you may see grooming equipment out on the trails today***
Also, late-breaking news indicates that John Edwards is dropping out of the Dem. race for the presidency, so we will contact him to try to get some of his leftover grooming equipment (we all know how well his hair stays in place, even in the wind.)
**********************

Saturday, January 26, 2008:
Steve took the pisten bully for a joy ride around the trails today and everything is groomed for skate and classic. The parking lot got blown in a bit, so use caution when turning around in the drifted snow.
The GC was groomed by Drew on Friday with some new variations.  You’ll see on your next trip to the golf course that a portion of the trail near the clubhouse has been flagged off. the trail was too close to a green and the compaction of the snow is bad for the underlying turf.
The back nine was groomed for skate yesterday, might still be a little soft. if your edges are cutting in a lot, do us all a favor and stay off of it until it can consolidate more.
On Friday, Steve reset the classic track at BC, and did some plowing in the parking lot so that there’s room to turn around easily. He reported that the conditions were poor Friday afternoon, snowing,  blowing snow, bad roads, etc and cautions potential skiers to check the WYDOT/ DEQ web cams before heading up. Further weekend grooming at BC will depend on what weather brings.
*********************************

Wednesday, January 23, 2008:  BC had 3" of new snow.  It was groomed for classic and skate.  Conditions are excellent, and its been warmer at that elevation than in Lander.
****************************

Monday, January 21, 2008:  Full moon, cold enough to keep the mosquitoes at bay, but the GC was groomed for skate and classic today.
#######################

Saturday PM, January 19, 2008:  The trails at BC were groomed very well for classic or skate today.  It was disappointing to return to town tonight and see the weather forecast for tomorrow, but maybe the snowfall will wait till afternoon.  If it does, track skiing will be excellent.  If it snows, touring will be excellent.  Check the weather links before heading out, and you will be pleased.
**************<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>

Friday, January 18, 2008:  GC was groomed for classic and skate after dark.  Classic tracks are shallow, but should be decent on Saturday.
BC grooming is planned for Sat. AM.  Snow conditions there are very good.
********************

Wednesday, January 16, 2008:  BC groomed for classic and skate - all trails.  There is 6-9" of new cold snow there, so it will be slow for skating until temps come up.
GC was groomed for skate today.  It will be difficult to get a classic track to stay until temps rise alittle.  Sugar snow and cold temps hinder the sintering process needed to get the classic tracks to set with the equipment we have available at the golf course.
***********************
Sunday, January 13, 2008:   The golf course and Beaver Creek trails were all regroomed on Saturday.  Conditions are good for skate and classic.
**************************
Wednesday, January 09, 2008:  The GC is getting groomed and utilized by the Jr. High skiers.  It is holding up well.   BC got groomed for skate and classic on Wednesday, and conditions are excellent as long as the wind holds off.  There is one rock protruding in the track at the windy lip before the big downhill on the BLM loop (you know the place, just past the pine tree on the left before the aspens on the right........)  Okay, just beware of dark spots in the classic track.
************************
Monday, January 07, 2008:  The golf course was regroomed today for skate and classic.   Conditions there are holding well.
************************
Sunday, January 06, 2008:  Forecasted report - We will be leaving early to get to BC, but trails will not be groomed until late morning or early afternoon at the soonest.  This report is being written Sat. night, since we won't be able to update this site until returning to town.  Weather reports indicate that 6-12" of windblown snow hit there Saturday, so if all goes well, we should have some nice conditions to ski.  We also intend to rotate some equipment between there and the golf course, for use during the weekdays.  This negates being able to groom the GC on Sunday.
*************************
Saturday, January 05, 2008:  GC regroomed, conditions were very good, but will vary with temp changes.  South Pass Hwy is closed this AM, so no new grooming, but we expect to have new snow.  Will try to groom this evening or tomorrow AM as the situation allows.  Meantime, expect unpacked conditions at BC until further notice.
************************

Tuesday, January 1, 2008:  The GC was regroomed this AM.  The classic track is alittle chunky, but hopefully the wind will let this one last a few days.
Beaver Creek was groomed last night, and conditions are fantastic for skate and classic.  The weather should be excellent with little wind, lots of sun, and temps 15-25F during the day.  I guarantee that this will be the best skiing you have had this year, or your money back (not sold in any store, etc etc).  Glide wax blue, kicker will be green early, changing to blue through the day.  Bring your lunch and camera, you don't want to miss this one.
******************************

Monday, December 31, 2007:  The GC was regroomed for skate and classic in the AM.
The decision was made to wait until late afternoon/evening to regroom BC.  It takes a minimum of 5 hours to leave Lander, get the machines fired, and to make one basic loop of the BC trails.  The way the wind was scheduled to howl again today, and with more people being able to ski tomorrow, it did not seem justifiable to finish grooming at 1 PM, only to have to start over again tonight or pre-dawn tomorrow.  Also, if groomed tracks are given a few hours to set-up, they hold up better and ski better.  We will update this report for New Years day, but for now the plan is to have BC ready for your Jan. 1st enjoyment.  We hope this works.
************************************

Sunday, December 30, 2007:  During early morning church services the GC was regroomed for skate and classic.
BC has new snow and high winds.  The roads are also dicey.
######################

Friday, December 28, 2007;  The GC was regroomed Friday AM for skate and classic.
BC was regroomed Friday night for skate and classic.  Excellent conditions at both.  Check the weather sites Saturday for a probable inversion yielding warmer temps at BC.  And remember, you have limited opportunities left this year to ski!
***********************

Wednesday, December 26, 2007:  Both BC and GC were regroomed today for classic and skate.  BC had 6-9" new snow from the Christmas day storm.  Conditions great at both venues.
WYDOT plowed the BC access, and an anonomous member graciously cleared the parking lot.  He's like a Santa without the beard.
****************

Tuesday, December 25, 2007:  Drew groomed GC this afternoon.  Lots of new snow will take some time to firm up.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Sunday PM:  BC is groomed for classic and skate!  Beware of a downed tree blocking part of the trail near Rocky Ridge on the BLM loop - we need to get a saw in there to clear it.  Thanks bigtime to Steve for spending all day today working on the equipment there, and then grooming the works.

Sunday AM, December 23, 2007:  GC was regroomed this AM and is now setting up real well for skate.  BC is still a work in progress and we will update news as it develops.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Sat. update:  Equipment problems at BC are delaying efforts to groom.  Meanwhile, reports have it that there are about 16-24" of new snow there awaiting your best touring styles.
Saturday, December 22, 2007:  A tag-team effort by Steve and Drew got the GC groomed for skating this AM.  Later today, an effort will be made to get BC groomed.  In the meantime, it should be good for classic touring at either venue, and we will update conditions when able.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Sunday, December 16, 2007:  GC got regroomed early this morning for skate.  Sunny and cool at GC.  Sunny and 20-30 at BC.  Its your choice.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Saturday Dec. 15:  The BC trails were touched up Saturday evening.  It is very good up there.  While Lander is experiencing cold days, the inversion is giving daytime temps of 20-30 F with sun and no wind at Beaver.    The junctions, upper Omera, and parts of the BLM loop are the areas where the stray rock exists.  If you see a rock that you can toss off the trail, please do, otherwise it will keep getting tilled up into the pack as we get new snow.

##################
Weds. Dec. 12: The Pisten Bully was able to be used at BC for the first time.  All trails are groomed, and a classic track is set around most of the trails.  Occasional rocks are still being exposed, so be careful.  The worst rocks are on the BLM loop, but some of the best skiing is also there.

#######################
Tuesday Dec. 11 :  The golf course has a 2.5 k loop packed for skating.  Snow is thin, but it is good.  Too shallow to set a classic track with equipment yet, but you can easily cut your own.
#####################
Saturday, December 08, 2007:  Eight hours or tag-team grooming with the Yamaha snowmachine has the tracks looking good for Sunday.  This storm has dumped about 12" of light upslope snow on Beaver Creek.  The trails will be alittle soft, but very skiable.
######################
Friday, December 07, 2007:  Finished grooming BC at 11:30 PM Friday night, but it was snowing and blowing so conditions are still rough.  Skating will be frustrating Saturday, but hopefully we can get ahead of the storm tommorrow for good skiing on Sunday.  Its beautiful up there, so go classic or touring in the meantime.
   ##################
Wednesday, December 05, 2007:  Its skiable with some walking, but not worth the battle right now.  The good news is that most of BC will have a good hard base if we can get some snowfall this week. The major areas that are bare are the stadium, 4 Corners, Powerline Jct, and middle Water Trough Hill.  Stay tuned, we will have excellent skiing this year!
#################
Monday, December 03, 2007:  Ugly.  The temps warmed today, and the wind was up.  There are numerous bare patches, and the skiing is poor.  More snow needed.
##################
Sunday, December 02, 2007:  Steve and Drew repacked all of Beaver Creek, except for the BLM loop.  More snow had blown in overnight.  Still a few rocks and sage brush snags, so be careful.  Classic tracks are not in yet, but the snow is perfect for setting your own kick and glide on the rolled trails.Steve on a cold snow machine
###################
Saturday, December 01, 2007:  BEAVER CREEK - Six inches of new snow today allowed grooming for skate skiing on all trails, except for the BLM loop which needs more base.  Conditions are marginal and you are advised to use caution +/- rock skis.  No tracks were set for classic due to the low snow pack.  Thank you Steve.
The golf course has not been groomed.
Driving conditions on South Pass are icey - use caution and park in the lot on the right side of the highway before the bridge.  DOT may ticket or tow vehicles parked on the left if they pose a hazard.
Earl the weather god has responded to your offerings.
###########################
Wednesday, November 28, 2007:  Well, Earl the god of weather is not smiling on us yet.  Maybe if we go outside each night and exhale 5 minutes of warm moist air Earl will release the flakes.  Snow is intermittant on the trails, and even "rock skis" would be abused.  As soon as its possible, we will groom.  Until that time....are your skis waxed and is gear ready?
############

Saturday 11/17/07:  Head groomster Steve Matson checked out the trails today, and reported that "....there is still no new snow to groom, and the undergarments tree has no new accumulation either."
